Grove City College Loses 11-10 to Walsh University in Overtime

Grove City, PA – The Grove City College Wolverines watched their playoff hopes come to an end against the Walsh University Cavaliers on Wednesday, April 13th.  Grove City needed a win to force a three-way tie for a spot in the CCLA Division II Playoffs between the Wolverines, Walsh University, and Carnegie Mellon.

Grove City started the game well, scoring first after forcing a turnover in transition.  Walsh’s offense began to click and they jumped ahead to a 7-2 lead in the second quarter.  The Wolverines scored the final three goals of the first half and took the momentum into halftime, trailing 7-5.

Grove City College Lacrosse Midfielder Jon Althausen Prepares to DodgeIn the third quarter, Grove City was able to tie the game at 8, and trailed 9-8 heading into the fourth.  The Wolverines possessed the ball for most of the fourth quarter, got a number of good shot opportunities, and tied the game at 10.

The Wolverines possessed the ball first in overtime, but were unable to find the back of the net.  Walsh took advantage of their possession and scored several minutes into overtime to win 11-10 and seal their  bid to the Conference Playoffs.

Gray MacKenzie led Grove City in scoring with 5 goals, while Midfielder Tim Irwin had 4 points thanks to a hat trick and an assist.  Jon Althausen and Luke Stoltzfus each scored a goal for Grove City, Ryan Althausen had 3 assists, and Jon Althausen added 2 assists to round out the scoring.  Senior Andrew Dymski made 13 saves while captaining the Wolverine defense.

rove City College Lacrosse Players Andrew Dymski and Jordan Markley Work to Clear the BallWhile the Wolverine’s playoff chances have dissipated, the Grove City College Lacrosse season may not be over.  A conference game against John Carroll University was postponed due to snow earlier in the year, and may be rescheduled.  Details will be posted to the website, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

With the loss, Grove City College Lacrosse falls to 3-7 on the year.  Walsh University improves to 6-1, and will now travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to face Saint Louis University and Butler.

Grove City Falls to Carnegie Mellon in OT

Grove City, PA – The Grove City Wolverines lost a conference game to Carnegie Mellon University by a score of 9-8 on Saturday, April 2nd.  Grove City led 4-2 at the half, but a lackluster third quarter allowed the Tartans to go ahead 6-4 going into the fourth quarter.  Grove City outscored CMU 4-2 in the final quarter, tying the game and sending it in to overtime.

Kellen Quackenbush got a good look at the cage early in overtime, but his shot bounced off the crossbar and away from the goal.  Carnegie Mellon was able to win the groundball and end the game with a goal by freshmen midfielder Craig Matturro.

The Wolverines had quality shots throughout the game, but their inability to convert combined with Carnegie Mellon’s ability to take advantage of opportunities allowed the Tartans to escape with a win.

Grove City moves on to face #1 Grand Valley State University at 6:30pm on Friday, April 8th on Grove City’s Thorn Field.

Grove City College Loses to Dayton 16-5

Dayton, OH – The third-ranked Dayton Flyers defeated the Grove City College Wolverines by a final score of 16-5 on Saturday, March 19.  The Wolverines, missing two starters, trailed 4-0 at the end of the first quarter.  Kellen Quackenbush and Tim Irwin combined for 3 goals in the second quarter, but Grove City surrendered 4 more Dayton tallies and trailed 8-3 at the half.

Grove City moves on to host #8 Briarcliffe on Friday, March 25th @ 7:00pm on Thorn Field.  #4 Davenport will visit Grove City on Saturday, March 26th @ 3:00pm.  The weekend contests between MCLA Top 10 teams could have significant implications for the MCLA D-II National Tournament.

Grove City College Lacrosse Earns Two Key Victories

Dayton, Ohio – The Wolverines returned to Grove City College on Saturday, March 12th, following two big wins over ranked MCLA D-II opponents.  Grove City defeated #19 Missouri Baptist by a score of 11-10 on Friday, March 11th, on a last-minute goal by midfielder Tim Irwin (#26), then turned around and beat #17 Tennessee Wesleyan 12-8 on Saturday.

Grove City College Lacrosse Attackman Kellen Quackenbush had six goals for the Wolverines over the Weekend#3 Kellen Quackenbush led the offensive charge for the Wolverines on Friday night, with 4 first-half goals against Missouri Baptist.  Grove City trailed 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, then came back to take the lead 5-4 late in the second quarter.  Grove City led by two goals for most of the second half, but a late rush by the Spartans tied the game at 10.

At the 1:45 mark, Missouri Baptist committed a crucial penalty, and Grove City capitalized with Irwin’s winning goal with 1:05 remaining in the game.  Missouri Baptist had the ball and called at timeout with 0:35 left, but the Wolverine defense stood strong, closing out the Grove City College victory.  Irwin contributed his second hat trick of the season, #40 Ryan Althausen had two goals, and #24 Jon Althausen and #13 Gray MacKenzie each scored a goal to round out the goal-scoring for Grove City; freshman attacker, #5 Ryan Cypher, had two assists in the contest.

After a short night’s sleep, Grove City College faced off against Tennessee Wesleyan College at 11:30am on Saturday morning.Grove City College Midfielder Jon Althausen Dodges Against Tennesee WesleyanSenior Captain Jon Althausen led the Wolverines with 5 points via his first hat trick of the year and 2 assists.  Cypher stepped up with 4 goals, Quackenbush added 2 more, and Irwin, Ryan Althausen, and Luke Stoltzfus each contributed a goal for Grove City.  Ryan Althausen had 2 assists and Irwin added one.  Defensively, #44 Bill Sigmund held former All-American attackman Ryan Horvath to zero goals, #7 Jordan Markley was a consistent ground-ball machine, and #6 Mike McDonald and LSM #2 Matt Erdley led the strong defensive efforts in front of Grove City’s captain and senior netminder, #47 Andrew Dymski, who made 13 saves for the Wolverines.

Undisciplined play from Missouri Baptist and Tennessee Wesleyan led to many man-up opportunities for Grove City College, Grove City College prays with Tennesee Wesleyan following a Wolverine Lacrosse Victoryand the Wolverines’ discipline, self-control, and ability to capitalize on extra-man opportunities played a key role in their success.

Grove City will return to Dayton, Ohio on Saturday, March 19th to play the third-ranked Dayton Flyers. Dayton comes into the game with a record of 4-1, hot off of an 18-6 defeat of Tennessee Wesleyan and a 16-9 victory over Missouri Baptist.  Grove City College is currently 2-1, but the Dayton-Grove City contest will be the first conference match for both programs.

Grove City College Lacrosse Falls to Pitt 14-9

Pittsburgh, PA – Grove City College Lacrosse dropped their season opener to the University of Pittsburgh by a final score of 14-9 on Friday, February 18th.   The game, the first official MCLA game of the season for both teams, was played at the Cost Center on the Pitt campus.  The Wolverines had a strong first possession, struggled to control the ball effectively throughout the first half, and trailed at halftime 8-3.  Grove City’s play improved in the third and fourth quarters, and they traded goals with the Panthers in the second half en route to the 14-9 loss.

The Wolverines were led offensively by midfielders Tim Irwin and Ryan Althausen who each scored 3 goals, despite not playing in the first quarter.  Seniors Jon Althausen and Gray MacKenzie each added a goal and an assist, Mike Carnock scored Grove City’s first goal off of a deflected shot, and Gill Trainor rounded out the Wolverine’s offensive production with an assist. Defensively, Andrew Dymski stopped 19 shots in cage, but the Panthers were able to get good looks at the cage all night.

Despite the loss, Senior Captain Andrew Dymski remains optimistic about the season: “Gaining that first regular season game of experience is invaluable for a young roster.  We’ve got talent, we’ve got depth, and we’re headed in the right direction.  We’ve got three weeks to prepare, and we’ll be better and we’ll be ready for Missouri Baptist.”

Grove City moves on to face Missouri Baptist Universe at 8:30pm on March 11 in Dayton, Ohio.  The Wolverines will then take on Tennessee Wesleyan at 11:30am on March 12.

Grove City Lacrosse Alumni Game a Big Hit

Grove City, PA – On Saturday night, October 9th, the current Grove City lacrosse team faced off against players from the past in the annual Grove City Lacrosse Alumni Game, capping a beautiful Homecoming day.

Grove City Lacrosse Wolverines Alumni and Current Players at the 2010 Grove City College Lacrosse Alumni GameThe alumni were able to produce on offense consistently throughout the game due to contributions from both new and seasoned alumni, and prevailed 7-6.  Christopher Kellner and Joshua Hostetler, two players from last year’s National Tournament team, as well as Drew Wardlow and Evan Feinberg, past players, sparked much of the offense.

Defensively, a hard-hitting unit led by Pete Tooley held the offense of the current team in check.  Current midfielder Jon Althausen and Kellen Quackenbush led the offense for this year’s squad.  Mike Carnock and Andrew Williams also scored for the Grove City actives.  Jordan Markley played well defensively, in front of stone-wall senior captain goalkeeper Andrew Dymski.

After the game, Head Coach Mark Sandvig addressed both past and present players, speaking in regard to the team’s focus and direction for the coming year and near future.   Among other points, Sandvig talked about a desire to invest in a more active and involved alumni network.

Grove City Lacrosse Releases 2011 Schedule

Grove City, PA – The Grove City Wolverines have announced their official 2011 Season Schedule.  Included among the highly regard opponents on one of the most competitive schedules in MCLA D-II are Davenport University, Grand Valley State University, and the University of Dayton.  Each of these CCLA D-II programs reached the quarter-final round of the MCLA National Tournament in Denver, Colorado last May.

Grove City College Lacrosse Wolverine LogoIn addition to Dayton, GVSU, and Davenport, the Grove City Lacrosse schedule will include nationally ranked opponents Briarcliffe College, Missouri Baptist University and Tennessee Wesleyan College.  Grove City will also face divisional foes John Carroll, Carnegie Mellon, and Walsh University, as well as Southern Connecticut State University and the University of Pittsburgh, a Division I program, who will host Grove City to kick off the season on February 18th.

Grove City is continuing to build this year in pursuit of a National Championship after the Wolverines reached the National Tournament in 2010 for the first time in the program’s 17 year history.  Despite the loss of key contributors and the difficulty of the schedule, the team is optimistic about their chances in 2011.

Following the season opener at Pitt, Grove City will head to the Athletes in Action Sports Ministry Field in Xenia, Ohio on Friday, March 11th at 8:30 PM (EST) to take on Missouri Baptist, followed by a game with Tennessee Wesleyan at 11:30 AM the following morning.  A week later, March 19th, Grove City will return to Ohio to play divisional rival, Dayton in a 3:30 PM game.

The Wolverines will come home to play Briarcliffe College at 7:00 PM on Friday, March 25th on Grove City’s own Thorn Field.  The following day, Grove City will battle Davenport University at 3:00 PM, again on Thorn Field.  Next on the schedule will be a trip to Cleveland to face John Carroll University at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 30th, followed by a home game against Carnegie Mellon at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 2nd.

In another match-up of high-caliber, National Championship contenders, Grove City will host Grand Valley State University on Friday, April 8th at 7:00 PM.  The Wolverines will then play host to Southern Connecticut State University at 7:00 PM on Saturday, April 9th, and will close out the regular season with a home game against MCLA newcomer Walsh University on Wednesday, April 13th at 6:30 PM.

It will be an intense year for Grove City Lacrosse, and one in which the team will be tested physically, mentally, and emotionally.  A key determinant of Grove City’s success will be the ability to develop team chemistry while continuing to push each other to improve.  Follow the progress of the Wolverines right here at grovecitylacrosse.com.

Grove City College Lacrosse Announces Pro Look Sports Sponsorship; Unveils 2011 Uniforms

Grove City, PA – The Grove City College Men’s Lacrosse team is pleased to announce a sponsorship with uniform supplier Pro Look Sports (Provo, Utah).  Through this sponsorship, Pro Look Sports becomes the official provider of uniforms for the Grove City College Men’s Lacrosse team.  Pro Look will provide the team with custom home and away jerseys sets and game shorts for the 2011 season, with plans to add an “Alternate” Jersey in 2012.

In 2011, Grove City College Lacrosse made the decision to return to traditional institution colors of Crimson and White.  These colors are used heavily in both the new home and away jerseys.  The white home jersey features three logos: the Wolverine, the MCLA logo, and the Grove City College shield.  The Wolverine, the unofficial club sports logo of Grove City College, is featured on the back of the jersey above the numbers.  The shield is placed in the center of the collar.  The MCLA logo is worn on the right shoulder.  The crimson shorts feature a white wide stripe, numbers, and the Wolverine logo.  Here are mock-ups of the new uniforms – check back for actual pictures once we get them in!

Grove City College Lacrosse Returns to Campus

Grove City Lacrosse Players Andrew Dymski and Ryan Herman speak with Jake Loosararian and Matt Rexrode at an informal throw around.Grove City, PA – The academic year is back in session at Grove City College and the Grove City Men’s Lacrosse Team is gearing up for the 2010-2011 year.  Around school grounds, returners and freshmen recruits are outside daily, sharpening stick stills and working out in preparation for another successful season.  After an appearance in the Quarterfinal Round of the MCLA D-II National Championship Tournament in Denver, Colorado in 2010, the Wolverines are hungry to return to the tournament and claim a National Championship.

Though formal team workouts haven’t begun yet, the team has been busy.  Coaches, captains, and officers have been diligently working to set the stage for the Wolverine Lacrosse program to continue to grow and improve in the coming year.  Among those eagerly anticipating the coming season is Senior Midfielder Gray MacKenzie, “I have been a part of this [Grove City Lacrosse] for three years now and each season has been a time of significant growth.  We have had a winning record in each year so it hasn’t been a rebuilding type of growth, it’s the result of a commitment to continuous improvement, to building an excellent program from the ground up.  From the schedule Coach Sandvig puts together and the on-field quality of the team to the organizational structure and the emergence of the program on the national scene, everything has improved incredibly and I’m excited to see it continue to grow.”
