Wolverines set to take on four top-10 teams; multiple playoff teams from a season ago
Grove City, Pa – The 2012 schedule for the Grove City men’s lacrosse team is looking to be another gauntlet of opponents for the Wolverines, who will take on four teams ranked in the preseason Top 10, including two Top 5 programs. The Wolverines will play 13 regular-season games, with 4 being in Grove City. Highlighting the home schedule are non-conference games against Taylor and Calvin with two divisional games against John Carroll and national powerhouse Dayton.
The Wolverines’ strength of schedule was rated the second toughest nationally in MCLA Division II just a season ago and looks to be just as daunting this season. After a tough season in which they finished 3-7, the Wolverines are looking to bounce back into the elite ranks of the CCLA and MCLA.
The squad’s road games include trips south to St. Louis, North Carolina and Georgia as well as trips to Ohio and Michigan.
The season will kick off with a non-conference matchup in Pittsburgh against University of Pittsburgh on February 18th. The Wolverines lost to Pitt last year 14-9. After a CCLA conference game on February 25th at Carnegie Mellon, the Wolverines will head south to play #11 Elon on March 1st and then #9 Savannah College of Art and Design on March 3rd. Both Elon and SCAD are traditional powerhouses out of the South.
Following the trip south, the Wolverines will be home for a two-game weekend against Taylor on March 9th and Calvin on March 10th. The Wolverines are excited to renew the “Holy Wars” rivalry that has been a tradition in the past for all three programs. Both games vs. Taylor and Calvin are scheduled to be played on Thorn Field.
After their weekend home matchup, the Wolverines will travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan to take on defending national semi-finalist Grand Valley State on March 16th and Aquinas College on March 17th. Aquinas was a CCLA playoff team a year ago and Grand Valley State came just short of winning the National Championship. The Wolverines will jump back on the road to take on Walsh March 21st, a CCLA playoff team last season.
After a few weeks off, the Wolverines will travel to CCLA conference rival Walsh, another playoff team from a year ago, that should prove to be a hotly contested matchup. After the CCLA in-conference game, they will travel south for a second time to St. Louis to play nationally ranked Washington University of St.Louis on April 13th and Lindenwood-Bellville on April 14th. Both games should be interesting, first time matchups for all schools.
Grove City returns to league action when it hosts John Carroll under the lights on Thorn Field April 18th at 7 p.m. They will then close out the regular season at home, April 21st against national powerhouse Dayton.
